A total of 33 police officers are being investigated over their roles in Rotherham child sex abuse scandal as police watchdog confirms ‘potential misconduct’

Investigators looking into police officers’ roles in the Rotherham child sexual exploitation scandal have identified ‘potential misconduct’, according to the police watchdog.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct’s (IOPC) inquiry into South Yorkshire Police’s response to child sexual exploitation (CSE) over more than a decade in Rotherham ‘has grown significantly during the last year’, it has said.

The IOPC said its Operation Linden had grown to 98 investigations by the beginning of April 2018, compared with 62 at the same point in 2017.

A spokesman said 45 investigation reports have been completed and 33 current and former police officers remain under notice that they are being investigated

John Allen trial: Children’s home boss found guilty of 26 counts of sexual abuse

A former millionaire who abused vulnerable children in his network of community care homes was found guiltytoday of 26 counts of child sex offences, becoming the first person prosecuted following an ongoing investigation into historical child abuse in north Wales.

John Allen, 73, created a “culture of fear” over so many years that his victims became “hardened to the abuse”, a court heard.

Allen, who also managed pop bands, had denied 40 charges of sexual abuse against 19 boys and a girl – aged between seven and 15 at the time – while he ran Bryn Alyn Community children’s homes in and around Wrexham between 1968 and 1991.
