Investigators looking into police officers’ roles in the Rotherham child sexual exploitation scandal have identified ‘potential misconduct’, according to the police watchdog.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct’s (IOPC) inquiry into South Yorkshire Police’s response to child sexual exploitation (CSE) over more than a decade in Rotherham ‘has grown significantly during the last year’, it has said.

The IOPC said its Operation Linden had grown to 98 investigations by the beginning of April 2018, compared with 62 at the same point in 2017.

A spokesman said 45 investigation reports have been completed and 33 current and former police officers remain under notice that they are being investigated

A former Dragons’ Den star and economic adviser to David Cameron has appeared in court accused of having sex with a 13-year-old girl.

Doug Richard worked closely with Mr Cameron and Mr Osborne for several years while they were in opposition.

In 2008 he was made chairman of the Tories’ Small Business Task Force and represented Britain on an international trade mission to Africa after the 2010 election.
In 2011 he went on an official Government trip to Africa and also worked as an adviser to Chancellor George Osborne.

Officer leading Operation Hydrant inquiry says out of 1,433 alleged offenders 76 were politicians, 43 were from music industry and 135 were from TV, film or radio.
Police across the country are investigating more than 1,400 men – including 261 high-profile individuals – over allegations of child abuse in the past, a senior officer running the national operation has revealed.

The scale of alleged child abuse across society – both recent and non-recent – was stark, said Ch Const Simon Bailey, who runs Operation Hydrant, the national coordinating team overseeing the various inquiries.

Figures from police forces in England and Wales published on Wednesday reveal that 1,433 men have been identified in reports of alleged abuse by victims, since the operation was set up in 2014.
Of these 216 are dead, 76 are politicians, both national and local figures, 43 are from the music industry, 135 from TV, film or radio and seven from the world of sport. The cases include recent high-profile convictions, including Rolf Harris, Gary Glitter and Max Clifford.
